Generic Propecia ( Finasteride) is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in MEN ONLY.
Mechanism of action : It works by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for the formation of dihydro-testosterone in a man's body. The enzyme converts testosterone to DHT, and it is believed that DHT is a key factor in male pattern hair loss. Finasteride decreases the concentration of DHT in a man's scalp by about two-thirds.
Dosage: This medicine may be administered with or without meals. The recommended dose is one tablet (1 mg) taken once daily.
Indications : Generic Propecia is the first pill that effectively treats male pattern hair loss on the vertex (at top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area. Propecia is an oral medication that you take once a day, with or without food.
Contraindications: Generic Propecia is contraindicated in the following:
• Pregnancy. Finasteride use is contraindicated in women when they are or may potentially be pregnant. Because of the ability of Type II 5a-reductase inhibitors to inhibit the conversion of testosterone to 5a-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), this drug may cause abnormalities of the external genitalia of a male fetus of a pregnant woman who receives finasteride. If this drug is used during pregnancy, or if pregnancy occurs while taking this drug, the pregnant woman should be apprised of the potential hazard to the male fetus.
Side effects : Side effects reported in approximately 2% of patients included a diminished desire for sex, difficulty achieving an erection, and/or a decreased amount of semen. The drug will not be marketed for women because safety and effectiveness have not been established in women, and it is associated with birth defects.
Storage : Store at room temperatures below 30°C (86°F). Protect from light and keep container tightly closed.
