How does Placenta Previa affect the health of women?

The placenta is a pancake-shaped organ that is usually located near the top of the uterus and the placenta is responsible for providing the nutrients to the baby via the umbilical cord. Women having Placenta Previa mean the placenta is unusually placed at the lower side of the uterus or the placenta is the layer that is covered, touching the cervical opening. Some women also do face the problem of the low lying placenta and this occurs when the edge of the Placenta is within two centimetres of the cervix but not touching the uterus.

Is danger caused due to Placenta Previa?

Also, due to the placenta being near to the cervix, there are chances of serious bleeding, and women having such issues are likely to undergo a cesarean section.

How to know whether you’ve Placenta Previa?

During the first trimester, this cannot be known well as the pregnancy yet holds the embryo status. The pregnancy can be continued even if you have this status under the supervision of a health care provider.

This can be well known during the mid-pregnancy ultrasound exam or between 18-22 weeks. The most common or the only symptom visible during the second half of pregnancy that can be experienced includes vaginal bleeding during the second trimester. Women are likely to have to bleed only if the cervix begins to thin out or opens up that can disrupt the blood vessel in that area. At least 10-20% of women having Placenta Previa are likely to have uterine contraction and pain accompanied by bleeding due to which one needs to rush to the emergency room.

Complications that might occur due to Placenta Previa

  • Future Preterm birth
  • Premature birth

Women at the risk of having Placenta Previa

Some women are at risk of having such conditions and below mentioned is a list
  1. You have had a C-section before which was risky
  2. Your uterus is abnormally shaped
  3. You have Placenta Previa even during your first pregnancy
  4. You’re a smoker
  5. You do intake cocaine
